Sardinia, southern beaches from Pula to Porto Teulada

Heading south west from Cagliari passing Sarroch and the Saras refineries, you get to one of the most beautiful and wild sections of coast in Sardinia. Called the Costa del Sud, it extends from Pula to Porto Teulada and its low population density ensures a well preserved natural environment. It has wide sandy beaches, bays, verdant headlands, coves and Spanish watchtowers. The best way to explore the area is by motorbike or otherwise by car and the coast road is extraordinarily beautiful, definitely one of the most spectacular in Italy.

A long stretch of coast stretches west of Pula separated from the road by luxuriant Mediterranean vegetation. It is the beach of Santa Margherita di Pula, a never-ending expanse of sand and the longest beach in this area. Its few hotels and houses and the exclusive Forte Village have minimal environmental impact, have been built to blend in discreetly into the environment and are hidden away in the large pine woods on the edge of the beach.

Heading west after Santa Margherita the road forks. If you take the Sulcitana road, the SS195, towards Teulada and follow it inland, turning left to Chia and continuing along the sea front as far as Porto Teulada, you’ll get to one of the most spectacular viewpoints of the whole Sardinian coast. There are many beaches around Chia, the main tourist hub of the area: Su Portu, Sa Colonia and, further west towards Capo Spartivento, Cala Cipolla and Su Giudeu.

Between Chia and Porto Teulada, the coastline stretches out in a succession of beaches and bays, headlands and viewpoints. Between Capo Spartivento and Capo Malfatano, the most beautiful beach is in La Tuerredda, a cresent shaped sparkling white sandy beach which stretches out into a crystal clear sea and the Tuerredda island which you can swim to. In summer there is a paying car park and a bar-restaurant kiosk and you can rent beach umbrellas and deckchairs.
