The Duron valley is very probably the most beautiful lateral valley of the Val di Fassa and one of the most wonderful of the Trentino Dolomites. Entirely within the town boundaries of Campitello di Fassa, it is medium-high valley which widens out and opens up in front of two of the most beautiful peaks you could ever hope to see: Mt. Sassopiatto, a truly magnificent peak that attracts the fittest walkers, and the Catinaccio massif or Rosengarten (the rose garden) in German. It is a wide, verdant valley with open meadows fringed by forests. Its panoramas are a moving sight at sunset to enjoy well wrapped up in autumn when the sun starts to set early but there’s still no snow around and the Catinaccio massif turns pink thanks to the unique properties of Dolomite rock.
Val Duron is ideal for everyone with straightforward walks on its high plateaux and open meadows for the whole family and footpaths for trekking enthusiasts to the Catinaccio massif and Mt.Sassolungo which you can get to even in winter thanks to one of the area’s classic ski mountaineering routes. It’s a route that you’d be best to attempt before late spring if you want to experience the enjoyable descent from the Sasso and avoid problems with the snow lower down. The valley also has a lot to offer fans of cycling because its very gentle inclines make it a great bike trekking attraction.
Rifugio Micheluzzi is a good place to sleep over for Alpine climbers and walkers. Modern and cosy it welcomes you to an unpolluted mountain location with home-style cooking in pure Val di Fassa style.
